Growth
Growth is a really interesting concept. On one hand, you could call this one of the most obvious values to have. On the other hand, it is a value that many organizations easily overlook but spend a lot of time figuring out how to achieve.
For us, growth is not a goal in and of itself as much as it is an outcome. We believe that when we are doing the right things for the right people and for the right reasons our actions will help them grow which will cause us to grow as well. To this end, growth is an outcome but a very necessary outcome.
Children are a classic example of this. You can’t set out to get your child to grow. What you can do is feed, care for and train them. When you do that, they grow, in physical stature, maturity and character.
Think of this from the financial metric of “Net Profit”. It is easy to say you want to drive more money to the bottom line but, as they say, the “devil is in the details” of how you get there. If you set out to grow revenue by slashing expenses, you run the risk of taking on toxic revenue (ie. Wrong clients) or slashing expenses in areas that are critical to your growth. As a result, a short-term attempt to make the bottom line look good can result in the long-term destruction of an entire organization. (Isn’t this played out on Wall Street every day?)
We have found that, when we take care of our employees and our clients, something interesting happens…they take care of us. When we have a client that trusts us, we can make a recommendation to them and they listen because they trust us. This results in a lower cost of sales which allows us to both reduce our costs to our clients and improve our bottom line. When we look out for our employee’s interests, we find that they are willing to stick with a problem well past “closing time”. This results in happier clients which lead to growth.
